Second Charter Teachers Strike Week in Chicago

Illinois: A teachers strike at a group of Chicago charter schools is poised to enter its second week. Negotiators are wrangling over pay and the Chicago Teachers Union reportedly plans “stepped-up militancy on the picket line.” Both the union and management “acknowledge that CICS [Chicago International Charter School] has offered pay raises and cost-of-living adjustments in each year of a potential four-year deal, though they offer divergent characterizations of how big those salary increases would be and whether they would bring teachers and classroom assistants on par with colleagues in traditional Chicago Public Schools.” Bob Morgenstern‏ (@MorgyWV) says “CICS financial records show the charter organization holds roughly $36 million in budget reserves that could help finance a contract agreement.
